Matthew Hurley Owner, Designer, Stonemason All of the products on this site (apart from those in the antiques section) have been crafted by Matthew Hurley. Matt has been a stone carver in Devon for the past 20 years. From the age of 16 he trained and worked with his Uncle and Father, both talented stonemasons. He works predominantly in marble, and his influences are those of the classical worlds of Greece and Rome, the architectural furniture of the Georgian period and the Florentine Renaissance. His extensive travels have also informed these areas of interest. A wealth of contacts in the stone trade have helped him to source material, learn techniques and histories. He specialises in pietra dura, the Italian art of inlaying cut stone. Matt creates elegant and decorative tables, following the Florentine masters but endowing his work with his own unique style. Matt also uses his skills in restoring traditional chimneypieces, and in creating beautiful fireplace reproductions. His extensive knowledge of marble, precious stones and stonework is further enhanced by having an archaeological MA in Buildings Conservation from York University.
